Amesbury Digest - 23rd November 2020

Kia ora koutou,

Things are certainly getting busy for everyone as we head into Week 7 - hard to believe we only have three weeks left of school! There is a very buzzy feeling as I walk around the school.

In the hubs

This week I have seen groups of Koru students making drums, singing, creating tapa cloth designs and lei, and performing sasa dances. Harakeke and Pōhutukawa have been working together in small mixed groups, creating art works, songs, plays and dances to represent stories, legends and cultures from around the world. It has been fabulous seeing the engagement students are showing in their inquiries, and I can’t wait for learning celebration this week, when they will have a chance to showcase their learning.

Another big excitement this week has been the speech competition. The judges were very impressed with the speeches students shared. Topics such as racism, poverty, starvation, things they were proud of, and treasured possessions, have all featured in speeches, with students showing a strong sense of passion in their chosen topics. The final was held on Thursday, and the quality of speeches from our finalists was very high. Congratulations to our third place winner, Shenaya, and our second place winner, Surya. Huge congratulations to our speech competition winner, Kyla. We are so proud of all of our students who entered into the competition and put such effort into their speeches.

New hub build

We are forging ahead with plans on our new hub building, and designs are looking very exciting! Construction is due to start in April or early May next year. Please see this article for more information and some updated images on the hub designs.

Events coming up

Have a great week, and we look forward to seeing many of you at our learning celebration and cultural festival later this week.
