Amesbury Digest - 20 February 2019

Kia ora koutou

It has certainly been a “buzzy” start to school this year with lots going on around the school. It was really great seeing year 5/6 students moving around the school doing Kara Chameleon’s Sun Smart UV Lab where they discovered that the effects of UV rays can be high in spite of considerable cloud cover. An incredibly valuable lesson!

RECAPITATION SURVEY
Thanks to all those who responded to the 2019 Recapitation Survey. It closed on Friday at midnight with 215 responses which means a good percentage of our families were represented. 104 people left comments to explain their decision. These responses provided us with very helpful data and all responses were thoughtful and considered. See the summary of responses to the main question below. I will make a report available, when it is completed, which discusses the survey outcomes in more detail.

Are you interested in having the choice of your child remaining at Amesbury School for year 7/8?

94.0%

(202 people)

Yes, I am interested in Amesbury School becoming a full primary (years 1 - 8)

3.7%

(8 people)

No, I would rather Amesbury School stay as a contributing school (years 1 - 6)

1.9%

(4 people)

I don't mind either way

.40%

Other:

Would be keen for a year 7 – 13 option.

As you can see, the results came out overwhelmingly in favour of continuing to progress our application for recapitation. This will require us to consult with all the schools in our network including the three schools who have opposed recapitation the previous times we have applied. There are considerable differences in the local context from when we last applied. Our feeling is that these contextual changes will lead to a more favourable viewing of our application by the Ministry and, we hope, by the schools in the cluster.

We will begin this consultation as soon as the survey report is completed.

SCHOOL OPEN MORNING

Please look out for the notice about the School Open Morning which we are holding 26 March, 2019. Making this morning available to parents was triggered by a parent walking down to Harakeke Hub one day to get her child for an appointment. When she came back, she commented on how good the learning looked down there and said that it would be great if more parents could see it. Hence, this opportunity for parents to come in and see it for themselves. If you wish to attend, it is important for you to RSVP via the School Open Morning form. There is a limit on the number of responses that will be accepted because we do not want to inundate the hubs with too many parents. We would rather offer it again next term. Also, if you wish to attend you must be at the introductory session being held in the hall at 9.10am.
