Secondary School News ....

Janine Jack —

Kia ora Parents and Whānau,

It seems summer only just arrived, only to wave goodbye again as we welcome a sudden cold snap! While we all enjoyed those few weeks of sunshine and warmth, the cooler temperatures have certainly made themselves known. With this change in weather, we’ve noticed an increase in students wearing non-uniform hoodies, which have been completely outlawed. We appreciate your support in ensuring students adhere to the correct school uniform.

As winter approaches, we’d like to remind you that the official black school jerseys are available for purchase through MKM at the manufacturing price of $98.00. These jerseys provide warmth while maintaining our school’s uniform standards. If your child needs one, please visit the main office to place an order in time for the colder months ahead.

Leadership & School Events

We would like to take a moment to acknowledge the fantastic leadership initiatives that our Kaiārahi student leaders have already undertaken this year. One of the standout initiatives has been the return of P.I.K.E (Primary, Intermediate, Exchange), which was first introduced in 2024. This program aims to bridge the gaps between the three main age groups within our school, with activities run by our Year 13 leaders. Many form class leaders have also stepped up to help, and it has been heartwarming to see positive peer interactions taking place across both the primary and intermediate levels.

This year has also seen a big focus on Whānau Spirit, with increased participation in both Swimming Sports and Senior Athletics Day. Not only were students recognised for their performance and effort, but we also celebrated the best chants and house spirit on the day. A huge congratulations to all students for their enthusiasm and participation, with some outstanding results achieved across both events.

Another major highlight was when our Kaiārahi leaders hosted New Zealand comedian and mental health advocate Mike King for a community-organised event. This event, run in support of Gumboot Friday, focused on mental health awareness and provided an opportunity to have open conversations about supporting one another. It was a fantastic evening that sparked meaningful discussions and increased awareness around mental well-being.

Student Expectations & Learning Updates

We have noticed an increase in the visible use of phones at school and we kindly ask for your support in discouraging your child from bringing devices to school. A NO CELLPHONE POLICY is in place and phones will be confiscated if they are used in public spaces around the school. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a focused and distraction-free learning environment for all students.

All learning is now fully underway and we have observed a rise in late or missing student work submissions for NCEA assessments. Supporting students in achieving their best is our priority and we encourage parents and students to discuss ways to stay on top of deadlines. We will also be looking at ways to minimise disruptions for students who need to catch up on missed work.

Ways you can support your child include:

  • Checking in on upcoming deadlines and study plans;

  • Ensuring homework and assignments are being completed at home;

  • Reaching out to your child’s teacher for an update on their progress.

If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to work together in supporting student success.

Ngā mihi nui
