Lyttelton Seafarers Centre

The Lyttelton Seafarers Centre is an ecumenically (Catholic and Anglican) operated centre. We support foreign seafarers (Filipino, Indian, Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian) on their arrival in the port of Lyttelton. 

 

Our chaplaincy staff visit ships, talk to the crew, supply information about our services, provide the crew with portable wifi and staff the seafarers' centre.

 

Crew are encouraged to visit our seafarers’ centre, which is open from 12-4pm and 6-9pm, 7 days a week.

 

Some of the other services we provide at the Centre are:

•   currency exchange

•   free internet

•   transportation to the city for shopping or sightseeing

•   advice on where to shop and local attractions

•   advocacy for seafarers’ rights

•   spiritual support

•   connecting crew to local faith communities

 

Overall, we seek to offer a warm welcome to seafarers arriving in Lyttelton and to provide the facility, services and pastoral support seafarers want and need while in port.

 

Applicant criteria:

•   eligible to work in New Zealand

•   have a NZ driver's licence

•   a good standard of health

•   a friendly personality

•   social media and computer skills

•   organisational skills

•   an ability to offer pastoral support in an ecumenical and multi-faith environment

•   a parish recommendation

•   some knowledge of any of the following languages is an advantage - Tagalog, Chinese, Hindi, Russian
