A Reflection from San Damiano Retreatants

Maggie Smith —

The Third Order of the Society of St Francis recently held a retreat on 28 October 2023 at Holy Trinity, Avonside.

A few thoughts from our marvelous weekend, written by Maggie Smith.

A joy-filled retreat, superbly led by Post Formation Director, Sarah Hart, with her focus on Days 28 and 29 – the third note: JOY.

And what a joy it was to meet with other Franciscans again – a time to connect, catch up, enjoy fine food, to pray, laugh, walk together and keep companionable silence. We shared the Eucharist, anointing and video clips, thanks to the technical expertise of Marion Fairbrass.

We watched the joy sparkling in the eyes of Archbishop Desmon Tutu and the Dalai Lama; spellbound at the choir and musicians of the music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the coronation of King Charles; were captivated by Brother David Steindl-Rast with his "Hymn to the Great Song" and the familiar "Canticle of the Creatures" chanted from the Hillfield Frairy.

Sarah took us through the wonderful Emmaus Walk story. We walked in the beautiful grounds of Holy Trinity or followed the river, each with a companion sharing, and then silent, aware of being joined by the Stranger, Risen One. Dr Chris Diggle offered an inspired reflection. Susan Slaughter gave an artist's picture of an encounter with a Pukeko – the sweep of the Avon, willows, flaxes, ducks on the water and the Pukeko with his cheeky tail-flip. I gathered wildflowers (weeds?), daisies, blue periwinkle, dandelions and pink sub-clover to fill a coffee mug – a cup of joy to refresh, delight and imagined St Francis with a stick fiddle and bow singing to our Creator.

We celebrated our new name with the lighting of candles, drawing on the symbolism of the nine stars of Matariki – a ritual of joy and a new season – San Damiano.

The Holy Trinity welcomed the Franciscans for Sunday worship – a time to renew vows, share lunch and make our farewell.
