How to make a submission on the Treaty Principles Bill

Common Grace —

Submissions on the Treaty Principles Bill are now open.

Even if this bill never becomes law, conversations about it will influence how many people view the Treaty. We can help to ensure the conversation is truthful and compassionate.

Common Grace Aotearoa has launched video resources and submission guides at: commongrace.nz/tpbgathersubmissions. They are offering churches two options to gather submissions:

  • Option 1) Run a 90-minute workshop. Gather to watch a video that includes a refresher on what Te Tiriti o Waitangi says; an introduction to 'Treaty Principles'; an outline of what the Treaty Principles Bill proposes; how to have your say and time for people to write their own submission.

  • Option 2) Gather submissions at a Sunday service: Use a 5-minute video and submission guide, and invite your faith community to make a submission during or after a Sunday service.

For either option, all the resources you need are at commongrace.nz/tpbgathersubmissions
Another key link is commongrace.nz/treatyaction. This is where to direct individuals to make a submission online.

While submissions are open until 7 January 2025, they encourage you to gather submissions before mid-December when people's attention turns to holidays! If you have questions, email contact@commongrace.nz.
