What does Adaptation Look like on the Ground?

Climate change, extreme weather, sea-level rise: This evening looks in NZ and overseas at how communities are adapting, and how agencies and institutions are handling it.

Speakers

Dr Kate Kipling, Environment Agency (UK)
Kate is the lead for policy, strategy and investment in the Environment Agency’s flood research team. She is interested in climate adaptation and community participation, and has led several research projects in this area. She has worked in science roles at the Environment Agency for 8 years and has a PhD in human geography.

Paul Zaanen, Joseph and Associates (NZ)
Paul has worked with some amazing communities who are challenged by adaptation from Earthquakes to Floods. He has undertaken over 12 years of on-ground community engagement and developed a deep understanding of the ‘how’ to have the required discussions in a manner that works for the communities.

Jonathan Kassian, Head of Research FloodRE (UK)
Jonathan leads Flood Re’s work to measure and incentivize resilience. Working with industry and government, his focus is on developing an actionable evidence base for resilience and policies that reduce flood risk, and on nature-based solutions. Before Flood Re, he spent five years working on energy security issues and international partnerships with the UK Government, and a decade in public policy work in Canada.

Dr Megan Wood MP, NZ Parliament (NZ)
Representing Wigram since 2011, Hon Megan Woods is a dedicated Christchurch native and community advocate. As the Opposition Spokesperson for Climate Change, Energy and Resources, and Associate Spokesperson for Finance, she is a strong voice for climate change adaptation. Her prior ministerial roles include Housing, Infrastructure, and more.
