The Rev'd Canon Ben Truman with his family by Convergence

Dear Friends, I am very pleased to announce today that the new Dean of Christ Church Cathedral will be the Reverend Canon Ben Truman (currently Vicar of Opawa-St Martins and Chaplain of St. Mark’s School).

Ben is both delighted and humbled to be serving in this role at such an important time in the Cathedral’s history.

Ben will be our youngest ever dean – 38 years old – when he takes up this appointment in early December, 2023. After study for a double degree in Dunedin, including a degree in theology, Ben taught at Burnside High School for three years. Following further study and ministry training at St. John’s College he was ordained priest in November 2015 and served his curacy in the Parish of Lincoln.

Since October 2017 he has been Vicar of Opawa-St Martins. Ben is very familiar with the mission and ministry of our Cathedral having served on Chapter (the governing body of the Cathedral) since July 2016. He is married to Johannah Truman, and they have three young children, Edward (4), Toby (2) and one-year old Thomas.

As part of our communication plan for this announcement, Ben recorded the following video and I encourage you to view it.

Please pray for Ben and Johannah and their boys as they prepare for transition to this new role. Pray also for the Parish of Opawa-St Martins, and St Mark’s School as they come to terms with the departure of their much-loved vicar, and for the Cathedral congregation as they look forward to a new Dean.

Arohanui,

Bishop Peter.
