Martial Artists Score Oceania & National Gold

Aquinas College —

Aquinas has more Taekwondo success to shout about! Year 11s Joshua Oficial is dripping in gold after representing New Zealand at the 9th Oceania Taekwondo Championships in Tahiti. Josh won two golds in the poomsae junior male individual and mixed pairs to add to the two gold medals he won 24 hours earlier at Tahiti’s President’s Cup competition.

It is the first time the fifteen-year-old black belt has won selection to the NZ team. He has been studying Taekwondo for seven years.

But he’s not the only Aquinas Taekwondo competitor in the headlines. Jared Ogayan, Jaythen Bag-ayan and Hazra Syed brought home eight medals from the 2022 Taekwondo Union NZ Open Championship in Wellington in October. Jared, Jaythen and Hazra won gold in the team poomsae event. They also medalled in grade 2-1 sparring: Jared won silver while both Jaythen and Hazra secured gold. Hazra also won two more gold medals in individual poomsae categories. Amazing work team!
