In each Aquinas Newsletter we’re putting one of our staff under the microscope to help you get to know the people helping to mould your child. This time it’s Mrs Marlize Greyling, teacher of Accounting, Enterprise Studies and Mathematics, and 2022 recipient of the Aquinas Staff Scholarship Award.

1. Your title and area of responsibility?

Year 12 Dean. Accounting, Enterprise Studies and Mathematics teacher. Teacher-in-Charge of Rugby.

2. How long have you been at Aquinas?

This will be my 14th year at Aquinas.

3. Last year, you received the Aquinas Staff Scholarship Award. Tell us about that.

It seeks to acknowledge a recipient’s contribution to the school and provide an opportunity for professional growth. It's awarded to someone who exemplifies the Aquinas Touchstones and demonstrates support for the college’s Special Catholic Character.

4. What hobbies or interests do you have? Please include any successes you have had in these areas if applicable.

I keep myself busy with quilting, sewing, knitting etc. I also like exploring NZ in our motorhome.

5. Tell us about your family.

My partner, Jaco, and I have three daughters; Mareli, Luzanndi and Nina. We also have an adorable Shih-Tzu, Lola, who rules the house.

6. You are the Aquinas liaison for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Why are you interested in this programme?

It is an awesome award and, by taking part, I believe students grow a lot as holistic people. It equips rangatahi for promising futures by challenging young people to develop skills and tools to improve themselves – and their communities.

7. Favourite song?

Depends on my mood.

8. What's the best way for students to get in your good books?

Do your best, care for others and be a student with integrity.

9. What's your favourite memory of your time at Aquinas?

All the welcoming teachers and students when I arrived at Aquinas.

10. Best advice for students?

I like this quote: “Reach for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars!!” Just do your best and love what you are doing.
