Aquinas has crowned its new 2022 chess champions!

Twenty-six students took part in this year’s annual contest, making their opening moves when the competition kicked off in August. Year 7’s Finn Phizacklea emerged victorious, claiming his year group honours and the title of Intermediate champion. The Junior champion is Year 10 winner, Dylan Tran.

Brian Liu is this year’s Year 11 winner, and Jaspar Collins is the Year 13 titleholder. There is no Senior champion or overall Aquinas champion this year as senior students left for NCEA exams before final matches could be played.

Aquinas’ annual chess battle was delayed until Term 3 this year because of the ongoing disruptions of Covid and winter illness. The event is run by the Aquinas Chess Club.
