Aquinas Nurse to Carry Out Routine Health Checks

Aquinas College —

A reminder that our school nurse will soon be conducting checks on students to evaluate their health and well-being.

Adolescence is a time of growth and development and can be challenging for some young people. Early identification of concerns ensures support and interventions can be put in place to assist students in their learning and health journey.

The comprehensive health check includes the Ministry of Health’s HEEADSSS Assessment to get an overall picture of each student’s wellness. It addresses areas such as:

  • Home
  • Education/Employment
  • Exercise/Eating
  • Activities
  • Drugs/Alcohol
  • Sexuality
  • Suicide/Depression
  • Safety

Any health risks identified will have the appropriate support offered to students and families. If you have any concerns or queries, please get in touch with Nurse Ana McFarlane at amcfarlane@aquinas.school.nz.

The HEEADSSS Assessment provides a structure for:

• Developing rapport with a young person, while gathering information about their world, including family, peers, and school.
• Developing a picture of the young person’s strengths and protective factors.
• Conducting a risk assessment and screening for specific risk factors – including drug and alcohol use, mental health risks.
• Identifying areas for intervention and prevention.
