Weather Bomb Fails To Derail Wellington History Trip

Aquinas College —

The Y12 History class spent two days in Wellington August 17-18 (plus a bonus night thanks to the weather bomb!) enjoying a variety of historical experiences.

This included staying in the grand old Waterloo Hotel, a fascinating tour of Parliament, a short but thought provocative presentation at Pukeahu National War Memorial, and hearing a deeply moving personal story from a relative of a Holocaust survivor at the National Holocaust Centre.

It was very impressive to see some students getting out of their comfort zones to try Vietnamese cuisine at Where’s Charlie? for dinner on Wednesday night, and even more so to see the refined chopstick skills that exist in the class!!

There’s no two ways about it, the weather was awful! And we had to do a lot, A LOT of walking, and had a flight cancelled which meant an unplanned night in unplanned accommodation. But wow, what an amazing bunch of students! Not once did I hear any complaints; just genuine good-natured attitudes abounded. A massive shout out to my Yr 12 History class and to Marie Webster for her support and help throughout. - Andrea Thwaites, Assistant LOL Social Science
