Japanese Visit Translates Into Kiwi Friendships

Aquinas College —

International friendships were forged and cultural customs and quirks exchanged last month as 20 Japanese students immersed themselves in the Aquinas community.

The students, aged 15, came from Tamadai High School in Tokyo for a 10-day trip to Tauranga Moana. They were part of a 100-strong group of Japanese students hosted by Tauranga families and schools to experience life in the BOP and NZ.

And the Aquinas experience was an obvious hit. Students sat in on regular classes, built new friendships, experienced Waimarino and the BOP, and tried out some Kiwi lingo and cuisine. (Mallowpuffs, NZ ice cream, and pies were big favourites.) They also entertained Aquinas students with some Japanese dances and games.

And while language barriers posed an initial hurdle, the universal language of sport, laughter and friendship overcame, leaving both Aquinas and Tamadai students richer for it.

Our thanks to our Aquinas host families, staff and students for helping to give our Tamadai visitors a memorable Kiwi experience.
