Year 10 Humanities Hangi Celebration

Aquinas College —

Tuesday’s annual Humanities Hangi was a fabulous success, providing Year 10 students, staff and parents with the chance to come together and enjoy manaakitanga, delicious kai and whakawhananngatanga (building relationships.)

Students helped prepare the hangi and even grew many of the vegetables in the school garden, including cabbages, silverbeet, broad beans and potatoes.

We are grateful to the many staff who helped create this opportunity to connect with our whānau. Our thanks to Jason Yorke for preparing the ground, the Social Studies Department, and to Matua Tuwharetoa Hapi, Mikaere Smith, Myles Reid, Richard Watson and Angus Donaldson for the ki o rahi.

The Aquinas garden’s remaining produce will be donated to Kura Kai or the Food Bank once ready. Earlier this year, students sowed the vegetable seeds into punnets, planting them in the garden when big enough, and sprouted the potatoes before planting. Tuesday’s vegetable haul marks their first harvest.
