The National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art
Why NASDA could be the perfect place for any aspiring musical theatre performers.
The sound of tap shoes on the specialist dance floors, beautiful belting of a musical theatre ballad in a vocal studio, or groups of students chattering about their devised project, NASDA is a place constantly filled with life, noise and energy. Run under the talented guidance of programme leader Sara Brodie, this school is a place for any aspiring musical theatre performer to really grow and develop their craft. Offering both the Certificate in Performing Arts and Bachelor of Music Theatre, students develop their skills individually, and also learning how to work in harmony (literally and metaphorically) with the other 3 year groups.
Ara facilities include two specialist dance studios with barres, sprung floors, mirrors and sound systems, and one studio which can also be transformed into a black box theatre. Upstairs there are 5 practice rooms with pianos, mirrors and sound systems, where students take private singing lessons, and can also practice in their own time. There is a large multi-use room, and a classroom with keyboards surrounding the perimeter for students to take musicianship, theatre studies and keyboard classes. We also have our very own in-house theatre, which is a versatile space that has been used for a wide variety of shows over the years.
NASDA is the only place in Aotearoa where students can study the Bachelor of Music Theatre. If high level, specialised, immersive musical theatre training is what they are after, then NASDA might just be the place. Our wonderful range of tutors have extensive industry experience, and many are still active in their chosen field. There are also many guest tutors, directors, choreographers and music directors who will come in to deliver workshops or work on specific projects. Having the chance to learn from a range of tutors means students are exposed to plenty of knowledge and perspectives of this art form.
For more information on NASDA, check out our webpage here. Applications close on the 28th of August, and applicants are then invited to attend the audition component. Great news for anyone interested who currently resides in the North Island, there will be a round of auditions happening in Auckland on the 16th of October. Christchurch auditions will be held on the 24th and 25th of September.
