Support our live venues
When rocking out to a good band in a Dunedin music venue you’re probably not thinking about the fragility of the service it provides, but many venues are having to extract themselves from financial holes dug by months of cancelled gigs due to lock down and social distancing effects.
Dunedin Boosted Mentor, Dallas Synnott, says, “Music venues usually run on tight margins, even in the best of times. Some venues are busy now, but they have a lot of catching up to do. Please support your local venues. They need you.”
Boosted is Aotearoa’s only online crowdfunding platform dedicated to getting homegrown art off the ground. It recently assisted the Save Our Venues campaign in raising nearly half a million dollars to help crucial small music venues nationally, with local stalwarts such as The Crown, Inch Bar, and Dog With Two Tails all benefitting.
Dallas says, “For a couple of the venues – the ground swell of community support from things like Save Our Venues has been a shot in the arm on its own. It’s reaffirmed just how important their place in the community is. Everybody has shown that they love and need them, too.”
“We have a very special, supportive creative community in Dunedin; it’s highly unique and wonderful in that way. Artists who have played at these venues and know their importance put their own money towards the Save Our Venues campaign. Venue staff have as well.”
There are still local artists and venues crowdfunding for support on Boosted, such as the Dunedin Musos Club, so dig deep.
