Science - Creating Lava Lamps
Science is everywhere in the world around us and is an important aspect of the curriculum for our students. We tailor science activities to fit children’s specific needs and passions, and to ensure that everyone has fun and is engaged while they are learning.
This science based activity used four household ingredients to create a lava lamp. This process enabled our learners to participate, observe and think critically about what happened and why.
Our learners were captivated while they watched the oil and water split. They discovered that this was because the oil is less dense.
We watched as the food colouring fell through the oil layer and then mixed with the water.
Then the real fun began as the pieces of effervescent alka seltzer tablets were added. When the pieces of the tablet hit the water layer, the sodium bicarbonate and citric acid reacted with the water to form carbon dioxide bubbles which shot up to the top in a fizzing motion, because gas is lighter than liquid.
Once the bubbles reached the top they popped and air was released.
The coloured blobs then sank back down to the bottom of the jar.
This science experiment gave our learners the opportunity to be scientists and observers of detail.
