Swimming at WCC

Whanganui City College —

Our Whanganui City College students have two regular swimming sessions at the local Splash Center where they have access to heated pools of varying temperatures. Our students are very fortunate to have Lizzy, our Arahunga Physiotherapist supporting the swimming sessions alongside the instructors and teaching staff.

Swimming is an important activity for our learners for their health, wellbeing and overall  physical development. It provides a wonderful therapeutic environment that enables our learners to develop their swimming skills, enhances relaxation and has muscular benefits.

A chance to experience total relaxation while in the pool can be a joy to watch

Our regular swimming sessions are a highlight for most of our students.

Lizzy, our physiotherapist, gets into the pool alongside the learners and provides invaluable support to each learner to meet their individual goals.

Our learners work on a range of skills that are personalised for them and include:  floating, making bubbles, confidence with head or face in the water, development of kicking, flutter board skills along with more advanced swimming strokes.

Lizzy gives support to go under the water to blow bubbles.

The sensation of being surrounded by water provides a wonderful experience that benefits muscles, joints, flexibility, strengthening, emotional and breathing regulation.

The process of swimming includes important life skills including: managing self throughout the sessions, dressing and undressing and following instructions.
