St Matthew's Ipswich - a serving and sending church

Mark Chamberlain —

St Matthew's Ipswich serves over 100 people weekly who struggle to put food on the table.

High inflation has brought many families to the bread line in the UK. As a result many churches are responding to this need. In the photo is Vicar of St Matthew's Ipswich Nick Atkin, Elizabeth (ex Mayor of Ipswich!) and Curate Dimitri. They and their teams serve large numbers of people in central Ipswich who struggle to put food on the table. And ten other Anglican Churches are doing the same!

This is part of the Inspiring Ipswich strategy whereby community needs are identified, met with Christian love and resources, and then people are invited to further engage with God. This strategy involves the following goals;

  • grow 25 new worshipping communities
  • provide fresh energy for the existing churches
  • make meaningful contact with 15,000 people
  • engage 7,500 people in exploring faith
  • have 1,500 new people become members of a worshipping community.

In 2020 St Matthews sent out about 30 parishioners to begin a new church to be called 'Bridge Church'. Their vision was;

‘to see church relating to people who are not used to church; where the potential of younger generations is unleashed and where faith comes alive.’
