Victory for Vestries in 2023: Improving Governance

Mark Chamberlain —

Following a request to develop a 'model' Vestry agenda, the attached paper is offered to help your Vestry govern well and develop effective mission in 2023.

I was asked by a Vicar before Christmas about producing a model Vestry agenda that was consistent with best governance practice and so that strategic matters like progress on the parish's Mission Action Plan were front and center. After consulting with Edwin and the Institute of Directors publication entitled 'Governance Uplift - Anglican Diocese of Christchurch' I offer the attached short paper.

One of the keys to good governance is of course spending quality time on strategic topics and avoiding being distracted by management and immediate ministry matters. Although buildings, land and finances are obviously important they must not be allowed to submerge matters of strategic, developmental importance.

We need to be developing our mission, carrying forward our vision and building a community of disciples who have the heart and the passion to tell others about the good news of Jesus Christ!

The attached paper includes paragraphs on a model Vestry Agenda, an Annual Work Plan, an Action Register and recording Policy Decisions. If these aspects can be implemented Vestry will run smoothly and the big strategic picture will not be swamped by the urgent and never-ending demands of ministry.

Good ministry, faithful mission and effective parish life - loving and worshiping God, making disciples, reaching out to new people, caring for God's creation and being an advocate for peace and justice in the world - are all dependent on the effective and competent governance of the local church.
