How would a mystery worshiper find Sundays at yours?
Naturally the first thing I did was go to the 'Ship of Fools' website for information ;-). The aim of Ship of Fools is to "help Christians be self-critical and honest about the failings of Christianity, as we believe honesty can only strengthen faith." Among other things they promote a 'mystery worshiper' feature whereby an anonymous visitor attends worship at a local church and then submits an evaluation.
Back in 2011 St Barnabas, Fendalton welcomed a mystery worshiper (Chris Spark preaching) and in the same year St Augustine's, Cashmere (Kevin Tapper preaching) was also evaluated - both were very positive! But then again that was a long time ago ;-)
The format of the evaluation is always the same and is actually a helpful way for clergy and church leaders to thoughtfully consider the ways their worship services help or hinder those who are seeking faith in God and a spiritual place to belong.
Find the 'Ship of Fools' questions in the attached document. I have added some other questions of my own. Even reading these questions with you Vestry and/or leadership teams can be helpful in developing sincere, engaging worship that is helpful to regular and newcomer alike!
