Welcome to Term 3 - Ruma Rua!

Claire Simpson —

Read below to check out what the awesome tamariki of Ruma Rua have been up to so far this term!

Music

We have started the term off by learning how to play some musical instruments.

The tamariki are getting the chance to learn how to play the drums, rakau, ukulele and the xylophone. Here the tamariki are learning to play the rakau in time to the beat and with their buddy. The tamariki found it challenging having to pass their rakau stick to their buddy while keeping in time with the music but they showed great resilience!

STEAM (Science / Technology / Engineering / Arts / Mathematics)

This term every Friday afternoon the tamariki are participating in a different STEAM challenge. The tamariki work in pairs or groups to complete a challenge where they have to problem solve, create, communicate, collaborate and use critical thinking skills. The engagement and discussions around this is amazing to see, the tamariki get very excited each week to see what the challenge will be.

The challenge this week was based around the FIFA Women's World Cup. The tamariki worked in groups where they had to create a goal and a goalie in which the goalie would be able to kick the ball away. The goalie had to be able to move by using a lever and not someones hand. The tamariki were given only a handful of materials such as straws, ice block sticks, paper, rubber bands, string and netting. The tamariki then had to test their creation to see if their goalie could kick the ball away.

Check out their awesome creations below:

Cross Country

It was great to see such an awesome turn out at Cross Country on Monday and the weather turned it on for us too!

The children showed great enthusiasm and determination competing in their race. The children all earned a house point for participation, well done!

Writing

We have started this term off by writing letters. We have learn't the format of a letter and what important features we should add into a letter.

We read the story 'I want a Iguana' where a little boy writes letters to his parents to convince them to let him get a pet iguana. The children then wrote their own letters to their parents convincing them of a pet they would like. Check out some of their letters below:

Dear Mum,

Can I please have a kitty. I'll feed her everyday. I'll make her bed or sleep with her. I'll give her milk every night. I'll make sure she is comfortable. She can play with me or a cat toy.

Love Ayla!

To Mum,

Can I pretty please have a puppy? I will take it for a walk and give it food and water and I'll even take it to the dog park to run around. It would make me very, very, very happy because I could pat it.

From your responsible son, Emile!

To Mum and Dad,

Can I please have a frog. I'll take it on walks, I mean hops and I'll feed it flies and bugs. I'll get it its own lake and lots of food to eat, a big bowl too. I will feed it lots of bananas because I love banana. Yummy!

Love your amazing daughter, Harper!
