Room 8 Update!
There's lots happening down at the Portsmouth Campus!
Check out the things that we have been doing in Room 8.
Fabric Technology: The year 7s have been working away at fabric rotations, where they learn the skills to help with their project, this year a boxed edge lunch bag. The rotations included setting up and labelling a sewing machine, sewing on a button, using an iron, laying a paper pattern onto fabric, learning to hand sew a running stitch - and all year 7-8 students have been sitting their sewing machine licence, ready to start their project! A lot of fun and important life skills being learnt : )
The year 6s have been refining their running and whip stitches by making '5 Stones' which can be used for a throwing game.
The next project is Matariki Fish.....using scraps of fabric from 'Stitch Kitchen' with the aim of reusing/reducing the material that goes into the landfill.
The Edgar Centre: For the past few weeks we have been focusing on futsal and unihoc for our sports skills. We finished with a mini tournament. It was great to see all room 8 getting involved!
Maths; Measurement is the topic this term. We've been brushing up on our use of formula for finding measurements relating to area, volume of both regular, irregular shapes. We've used practical sessions to put these into practice using 'real world' questions.
eg. What is the area of this cheese slice minus the holes!
Writing: We have focused on how to effectively structure a piece of opinion writing and one of the tasks last week was "What is the best thing since sliced bread?"
Did you know......In 1928, the Chillicothe Baking Company in the USA became the first company to sell sliced bread. Its advertising for sliced bread included the sentence:
“The greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped.”
But sliced bread didn't become a thing in NZ until the 1950's.
Room 8 thought that scissors, Tesla cars, Ipads, the internet, lightbulbs, electricity, the landline, butter (!), tv were all the best thing since sliced bread!
When we are finished with this task we are moving onto thoughts about public art, using the 'Teeth' on Portsmouth Drive as an example.....what do you think of them?!
