2019 Race Unity Speech Competitions
Speaking for Justice, Working for Unity
Ashburton College was proudly represented at the Central South Island Race Unity Speech Competition in Timaru on April 10. Mary Irish Bernarte, Melina Fakataha, Barbara Nabeka and Hope Saofai spoke passionately and compellingly on the topic of "Speaking for Justice, Working for Unity" - a timely message for our whole community. These students represented themselves, their families and aiga as well as their wider communities with impressive honesty. They each conveyed powerful and positive messages for all of us about working together for a just, inclusive and better future in Aotearoa. It is a real privilege to attend this speech competition with all of the competitors demonstrating leadership capability of a calibre that will ensure our future is in very good hands.
The competition was won by Jan Campomanes of Twizel Area School with Eve Hislop of Craighead Diocesan School in second place. We wish them well for the regional and national finals in Auckland next month. Fa'a fetai lava; thank you to the Baha'i Community and all the people involved in organising this special event .
