9V Innovation Citizenship project
Students have upcycled old t-shirts and blankets into bedding and toys for animals at the SPCA.
At the start of September 9V Innovation class began their final unit of the year based on Citizenship, to introduce the unit the teachers organised a working bee in our school sewing room. Using old t-shirts and blankets purchased from Ashburton Resource Recovery Park to create beds and toys for animals at the SPCA. Some students had previously done their rotation through the soft materials technology room so were ready to sew up some bedding for the animals. Students with no sewing experience got stuck into making toys for the animals using cut up strips from old cotton t-shirts. The students were excited and ready to make some awesome creations for the animal shelter.
This unit aims to get students to look at issues either in the local community or in the global community and come up with an action to help solve the issue. The skills the students will be learning include Participating and Contributing from the science and social science curriculum, Relating to others and Managing self.
Today we finished off the projects and delivered them to the local SPCA. They were so grateful for all the items made. They said that they would be able to send some to the Christchurch centers to be used by the animals there as well. They were also impressed that the materials used were upcycled and removing potential waste from landfill.
