Surfing GOT Day

Ron Carlson —

GOT Day looked like it should be a good day, however it started with a small hiccup - no bus. Finally sorted and we were on our way.  We then encountered a brief rain flurry going through Dunsandel – such a promising start.

Upon arrival the 32 budding surfers went through a short briefing on safety, what to look for in the water and surfing terms, skills and techniques. After being organised into wetsuits and groups it was off to the water. A reasonable swell allowed the novices to literally find their feet and soon most were able to stand up on the board and ride the waves in. Many successes and a lot of very spectacular dives and wipe-outs were seen throughout the morning.

After a break for lunch, the local takeaway shops did a roaring trade, the afternoon waves looked even more promising and the instructors took us from the waist deep waves to the first break in deep water. A chance to try being real surfers and catch the waves for a long ride in. Some excellent form, and some barely hanging in there were seen but much fun was had by all.
