Giving back to St John Youth
Young people teaching young people. By Drew Porter 13RMM
Over the past term, I’ve been continuing my work with St. John Youth. We have been working towards the community awareness badge as part of the Grand Prior curriculum. Activities our cadets have been doing include; making model communities, participating in Model UN and promoting our community. My role is to teach these modules to our younger cadets, I always find this very rewarding as I get to watch their growth and excitement when completing their badges. I enjoy being able to form connections with the younger kids, I love hearing about their successes outside of St. John throughout the week. Previously this year we also completed the water safety badge, as part of this, we went on a surfing trip. I have had immense personal gain from St. John over the years so I enjoy giving back.
Over the past 9 years St John Youth has provided me with the opportunity to develop leadership capability and gain the knowledge and skills to be an effective first responder. This work has recently been acknowledged through my achievement of the Grand Prior award which reflects many hours of community service and learning. I am very honoured by this and grateful for the support and work of all the people I have learned and worked alongside.
