Fun facts about hearing

Audiology South —

Did you know?

  1. Sound travels at the speed 344 metres per second, or 1239 kilometres per hour.
  2. Dogs can hear much higher frequencies than humans.
  3. Snakes hear through their jaw bone as well as a traditional inner ear. These two distinct hearing mechanisms help them hear and catch prey.
  4. The ear’s malleus, incus and stapes (hammer, anvil and stirrup) are the smallest bones in the human body. Together, all three could fit on a 10 cent piece.
