At Lyttelton we are all starting to get into our new inquiry mahi for term 2!
Our year 0-2 students will be exploring stories and the connections between land and people through visual art, drama role plays and retelling with digital tools. Chatterpix, puppet pals and book creator are some of the new apps they will be exploring this term!
Our year 3-4 students are currently building connections from their science mahi around wind and water to the concept of collecting and growing kai. They are looking forward to learning more about resources and materials used to make kete, mats and equipment for catching food such as hīnaki, then comparing them to what we use today. In week 5, the museum experts will be sharing their knowledge with our tamariki about whenua, and early Māori technology.
Our senior students have been exploring basic survival needs and researched their initial wonderings about the topic of life in Aotearoa during the 1300s. Year 5-6 have been utilising their digital skills to share their predictions and research on shelters.
For year 7-8, creative writing was a great way to put themselves in the shoes of early explorers and describe the process of arriving in a new country and facing challenges of survival. They also used the ‘jigsaw’ strategy by researching a key question from our wonderwall then sharing back to their small groups. They combined their mahi into slide shows to then share with the class.
All of our senior students are now beginning to explore how to share their mahi using Minecraft education. Over the past week they have been developing their skills by exploring how to create using different features and take screenshots and screen recordings to give us a ‘tour’ of their creations. ‘Screencastify’ is a great tool for recording both the screen and student as they share their worlds.
The next step for the year 7-8s is to complete a scavenger hunt for exploring ‘Ngā motu’ which is a fantastic resource to inspire their final project of creating a replica of a kainga with pātaka, rua kumara, wharepuni etc included in their design.

Although in the early stages, we are all excited to see where this mahi takes us and share the results at our Matariki learning celebration at the end of the term.
