Epilepsy Awareness Month

Rebecca Haig —

We were blown away to see so many children dressed in mufti to support both Jackson and Sakura, our Epilepsy heroes.

We have had the most amazing support from our Avonhead Community.

The Ice cream day was another huge success with the children all enjoying their ice creams. I am delighted to report that we managed to raise a total of $1611.00!!!

This was split equally between Epilepsy New Zealand, Matthew’s Friends New Zealand and The Brydie Lauder Charitable Trust. These organisations were chosen as they have all been a part of Jackson’s journey so far.

The Brydie Lauder Charitable Trust is very dear to our heart as it has provided the hospital with equipment, resources and has paid for training/upskilling for a variety of professionals within the hospital. It paid for our dietitian to travel the world visiting the top Epilepsy Centres in the world. This enabled her to upskill and learn about the Ketogenic Diet from the best in the world that Jackson is now on. Without the Brydie Lauder Trust Jackson would still be having uncontrolled seizures.

Matthew’s Friends New Zealand is an organisation that originates from the UK. Please take time to pop onto their website www.matthewsfriends.org and read their mission statement. Matthew’s Friends New Zealand have been a huge help to us when Jackson started on the Ketogenic diet. They provided recipes, cooking utensils and importantly the Ketogenic calculator. This helps us to create our own meals and recipes that provides variation for Jackson.

Epilepsy New Zealand has provided information, seizure diaries and are continually researching to find a cure for this condition. It was a privilege to meet Anna, Bryide’s Mum, at our School assembly on Monday. Jackson presented her with the cheque which she was delighted about. This was also special as she herself went to Avonhead School as a child.
