Understanding your child's Spotlight report

Avonhead School —

For Year 5 to 8 students

Over the last few years we have been pushing out the school reports via the eTap @school app. This makes accessing your child's report easier and reduces the need for excess printing. We will not be changing our current reporting structure.

We will have a major change in our reporting in 2026 now that we have received guidance from the Government. We will update families in Term 2 next year with the new format and explanations of the new progress descriptors.

This article explains how some parts of the Year 5 - 8 Spotlight reports are created and what they mean.

The first page has an explanation that links your child's year level with the curriculum level that they should be working at by the end of the year. For example; a student in Year 6 could be working at level 3M, while a Year 8 could be at 4M of the curriculum. These students would be meeting expectation. A Year 5 student working at level 2B would be working towards expectation whilst a Year 7 working at 4E would be exceeding expectations.

The second table shows what level of the curriculum your child is at based on the teacher's overall judgement, classwork, assessment data and observations.

The second page has three sections. The first is the Learning Qualities Learning Intentions that students have completed. It only lists the most recent 2 or 3 tasks that have been completed on Spotlight. There will be more Learning Intentions that your child has completed and these can be viewed in Spotlight.

The second section on this page is the next Learning Steps. These are the next tasks that your child is up to based on the activities that they have been assigned in Spotlight by the teacher.

The final section on Page 2 is the teacher's general comments for the mid year and end of year reports.

On Page 3, we have a graph which shows the progress of your child over their time at Avonhead in Reading, Writing and Maths. It is a graphical representation of the data from the second table of the report. To give you some context for the levels, we recommend using the table on the front page which explains the curriculum level your child could be working at based on their year level. At times, the lines and dots of the different curriculum areas will occupy the same spot so it may appear like a line disappears, but it is just sitting in behind the other line. We will continue to develop this graph to make it easier to see where your child is at.

On the final page of the Spotlight report are three sections. The first shows how many tasks your child has completed over the year in Reading, Writing and Maths. WALT stands for We Are Learning To. You can see examples of WALT's in the Learning Intentions and Next Steps images on Page 2 of the report.

The second to last section is the Learner Capabilities. These are selected by the students and help them to reflect on what they are doing well in class in regards to our learner capabilities.

The final section is your child's attendance at school. This is a quick visual way to see how often your child is at school, absent or late.
