Chess Champions @ Avonhead!

 Fourteen Year 5-8 students took part in the Chess Power Canterbury regional tournament held at Avonhead School on Friday. The players had 7 games each using the Swiss format, with 15 minutes per player per game. Clocks were used which was new for some of our players. Our Year 5/6 teams finished 2nd and our Year 7/8 team finished 1st. Top inidividual placings are as follows:

Juniors

George Ikeda - 2nd

Daniel Wu - 4th

Uros Ponjiger - 11th

Arthur Downey - 13th


Intermediates

Bhavil Patel - 2nd

Shivam Shankar - 3rd

Eric Wang - 11th

A huge thank you to Clare-Harriette who supported the team for the day, and a big congratulations to the players who represented Avonhead School with great sportsmanship and resilience.

UPDATE****

Congratulations to our Year 5/6 A and B chess team. Both teams competed at the Canterbury Schools Social chess tournament last Monday and won their divisions. Our Year 7/8 team also competed on Friday and came 2nd= in their division.

In addition, Bhavil Patel and Shivam Shankar have been invited to compete in the Chess Power Champions Trophy in Auckland in October. This tournament aims to find the best individual player in the country.
