Tālofa lava Avonhead families,

This week schools around New Zealand have been focusing on Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week. We have had a number of classes completing a range of activities that help us better understand and celebrate the culture and language of Samoa.

It is exciting to see our new Senior Playground being installed! The contractors have been working quickly and we should be able to open the playground sometime next week, weather permitting. It will be great to have another area for our tamariki to enjoy. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for our communities assistance with helping to keep our school safe outside of school hours. We love having the community onsite and using our facilities after school and in the weekends. However, we have noticed an increase in vandalism and littering (broken bottles) over the last few months. If you or your tamariki are onsite and notice any issues, please contact the school via email. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On Monday 23 May Avonhead hosted the Chess Power Tournament in our hall. This was a successful event for our students and we have had two teams qualify for the Nationals later in the year. Well done to all of our amazing chess players and a big thank you to Darelle Busfield for her time and energy in organising chess at Avonhead.

On Tuesday 24 May we held our Year 5 - 8 Cross Country. It was a superb day and our athletes all performed to their best. Thank you to the parents and family members who came along to support their children. Thank you to Bruce Rodger and the senior teachers for running such a slick event. We also had a large team take part in the North West Zones at Jellie Park on Wednesday 1 June. Our school representatives all ran very well and we have had 24 students qualify for the Canterbury Cross Country later in June.

It has been a busy couple of weeks onsite, with the Christchurch School of Music holding their auditions at Avonhead. We've had a number of students participate and we look forward to hearing how they went.

We hope you all have a safe and happy long weekend.

Ngā mihi,

Micah Hocquard
