Avonhead School's senior rugby team won the prestigious shield (first awarded in 1915), for coming 1st place in Canterbury in the 2017 Canterbury Sports Rugby Competition.

This is a real honour and the team has worked hard over the last two years to move from last place up to first place in the competition. Under the coaching and guidance by Mr Rodger they did us all proud with their convincing win in the final 98-28. The shield was presented to the team by Lyn Myles of Sport Canterbury. This shield is very prestigious, as it goes back to 1915 when it was awarded for the very first time. Avonhead school is honoured to be the recipients of the shield and the top team in Canterbury for 2017.
