Avonside Girls' High School —

South Island Secondary Schools Rowing championships

The rowers spent 3 days in Twizel from 13-15 March competing vigorously in hope of qualifying for the Maadi Cup team. They made 5 B finals and 5 A finals with the Under 16 quad winning a bronze medal. Unfortunately after naming the Maadi team, (Greta Hawke, Hailie Wheeler, Tasman O’Sullivan, Reece Sanders, Stella Cook, Ash Fleming, Molly Edwards, Aria Johnson) Maadi has been cancelled.

A big thank you for the coaches Kendal Everest and Marewa Cryer for giving the students a great season.

Dragon Boating

Congratulations to our dragon boaters for a fantastic regatta at the Canterbury Secondary School Dragon Boat Championship.

The students had a five week training period, before they took part in this championship. They came 7th out of 11 teams for the 250 metre sprints. They won the B Final for the 500 metre turning events.

The students were wonderful ambassadors for Avonside Girls’ High School. We are grateful to their coach Evan Roper, and the assistance of ex-students Chloe Breen and Pearl Cardwell-Massie.

The dragon boating team were Caitlin Anderson, Amber Ayrton, Charlotte Barrett, Madison Breen, Jaimee Cartwright, Jenaya Johnston, Jess Lyall, Ruby Simpson, Indiana Timms, Katie Walker and Ellee Wills.

Sport Cancellations due to Covid-19

Unfortunately the season has come to an abrupt end and winter sport season seems to be at stand still till further notice. Please ensure that your students are still undertaking fitness programs at home to ensure that they are fit for when ever we are able to start again.
