Matariki

AGHS —

During the last week of June, we celebrated the Māori new year, Matariki. Our Kōmiti Māori handpainted the nine stars of Matariki and placed them around the school with infomation about each star, to encourage the spreading of knowledge across our kura. Students also organised a range of lunchtime activities including a treasure hunt, chalk drawing and a film viewing. Students came together at the end of the week to prepare and serve soup and bread in honour of Matariki. We also hosted a visit from the Lincoln University Kaitakawaeka Māori, who took our students for some waiata and games. It was a great week to shine the light on Te Ao Māori.

Attached is one of the handpainted stars of Matariki, Waitā. Waitā is the star connected to the many kinds of food Māori gather from the sea.
