AGHS — Sep 27, 2021

In 2022, our junior programme will move to a semesterised programme. This will mean that learning in the junior school will be divided into two semesters: Semester 1 will run for Terms 1 and 2, Semester 2 will run for Terms 3 and Term 4.

Ākonga will study all 8 learning areas as they currently do, however they will have the freedom to choose from a range of courses within a learning area. For example, in Mathematics, there are 5 different courses students can choose from in Year 10. All will have a slightly different focus while still covering the compulsory components of the Mathematics curriculum. Choice will be available in all of our learning areas next year.

Ākonga will be encouraged to follow their interests and passions and to play to their strengths. In this way, we believe ākonga will be engaged by their learning better than before.

Why have we changed?

These changes are part of our Vision for Learning, where equity and student wellbeing is at the heart.

Choosing courses

Our current Y9 ākonga will make their course selections with the help of their Ako teachers, in Term 4 Week 1. They will be choosing courses for Semester 1 and for Semester 2 in 2022. They will also be asked to make back-up selections. They should make selections that best fit their interests, skills and learning styles.

If students have questions, please encourage them to contact their Kaitiaki or Kaitiaki Matua for guidance.
