Shakespeare Festival
Avonside entered a student-directed scene in the Sheila Winn Shakespeare festival this year, which took place at Middleton Grange School towards the end of Term 1.
Year 13 students Jessie Harris and Scarlett Noble directed Act III, Scene i of Romeo and Juliet, in which Mercutio, played by Rosie Paul, confronts the fearsome Tybalt, played by Pania Howden. While Romeo (Trinity Akurangi) and Benvolio (Brooke Winter) attempt to stop the brawl, the scene inevitably ends in tragedy.
Rosie, Pania, Trinity and Brooke were accompanied by a cast of eight Year 9 and 10 students (Isabel Macdonald, Olivia Thompson, Kahlan White, Mya Amuia, Isabella Godfrey-Grant, Lexie Godfrey Grant, Alisha Patel and Tessa Scott), whose responses to the action around them brought the scene to life.
The entire cast performed beautifully on the day, in what was a fiery and passionate scene. They were awarded the certificate for 'Best Fight Choreography' as a testament to their commitment. Student-directors Jessie and Scarlett also acted as MC's for the festival, and did Avonside proud in this role.
