PE Department Update

AGHS —

Surfing with Year 11's

In some of their final lessons of the year, our Level 1 Physical Education students were fortunate enough to be able to experience surfing at New Brighton beach. They experienced a great deal of success with most being able to get up and ride a few waves. A huge thanks goes out to Donna Henderson from Stoked Surf School as well as Nolan and all of their instructors. We highly recommend them to anyone looking to get involved.

Overnight Tramps

Our Level 2 PE LEAP students got to head out on overnight tramps to the Woolshed Creek in the Mt Somers region that were postponed from term 1 due to lockdown. There were three tramps in total and the focus was on safety in the outdoors with the students managing most aspects of the experience. The students were amazing and some even braved a swim in the nearby rock pools. There was no cell phone coverage or wifi and amazingly everyone survived.

Special Olympics Athletics Day (Picture below shows Millie Perrett, Sunny Radzyner & Alexus Masiu while running the softball throw)

A group of Year 10 students travelled out to Ngā Puna Wai Athletics centre to help Special Olympics New Zealand run their annual schools athletics day. Special Olympics specialises in sports for people in a variety of impairments and there were participants from 14 different schools in Christchurch. Our girls helped run activities like shot put, long jump, softball throwing and a variety of running events. They also played a key roll in presenting certificates and collating results for the day. This was a major event for hundreds of participants and it couldn't have taken place without the contribution of our students.
