YEAR 10 DANCE - 10DAN

This course develops practical dance skills, selfmanagement and interpersonal skills. It builds selfconfidence and encourages creativity. The students study the elements of dance through performance and choreography through several dance genres.

YEAR 10 DRAMA - 10DRA 

This course is mainly practical and does require focus, commitment and a willingness to actively participate. Written work includes theory notes and journal discussion. Content includes theatre form, design and technologies, the history of theatre, acting techniques, script analysis and character development, along with a class production. This course builds self-confidence; communication; group work; selfmanagement; critical reflection and analysis; performance and production techniques.

YEAR 10 MUSIC - 10MUS

This course introduces students to a broad range of music topics. Students will work on performance (mainly in

groups); learn basic keyboard; composition and song writing; a study of traditional and contemporary music, including hip hop and R&B; music theory and listening skills. Students will be introduced to music technology.

It is an advantage to be a member of a school group, although this is not a necessity. 

Entry Requirements: A basic knowledge of a musical instrument is helpful, but not a necessity

YEAR 10 VISUAL ARTS - 10VAR

This course explores the fields of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and design. Students will learn a range of technical art making processes and conventions. They will be introduced to the concepts of researching art works in context and be encouraged to develop a sense of creative inquiry to their visual world.

MĀORI PERFORMING ARTS - MPA123

This course is a multi-level course where students are able to participate in a Māori Performing Arts programme. Students will learn waiata, poi and haka. They will explore the tikanga around the Māori Performing Arts in an environment that will promote Tuakana Teina.

LEVEL 1 (YEAR 11)

This course involves performance of selected dance genres, student choreography, ensemble skills within dance, elements of dance and interpretation of dance performances. It develops practical knowledge, development of ideas and communicating and interpreting.

DRAMA - DRA111

This course includes a study of theatre forms, either melodrama or commedia dell arte, acting techniques, class performance and creating a devised drama. The course involves communicating and interpreting ideas; developing practical knowledge; participating and contributing; selfmanagement; critical reflection and analysis.

Students are required to actively contribute and attend rehearsals.

MUSIC - MUS111

Year 11 Music involves the study of performance; composing and an understanding of music past and present. Students will gain experience performing in groups and as a soloist (if they wish), theory, composition, score reading and listening skills (aural). A degree of competence in performance is expected at this level. It is also an advantage to take part in a school group, but this is not a necessity. Students can also study music technology, mixing and recording. 

Entry Requirements: 2 years practical music is helpful

Credits: Up to 30 credits can be gained at Level 1

VISUAL ARTS - PRACTICAL - VAP111

This course explores a personalised thematic inquiry. Students investigate a range of art making processes and conventions in the fields of photography, drawing, printmaking and painting. Students learn to use in-depth research and artist model influences to support their body of work.

VISUAL ARTS - DIGITAL - VAD111

This course explores a personalised thematic inquiry. Students investigate a range of art making processes and conventions, beginning with some wet and dry media, before moving into the use of various digital processes including photography, digital drawing and graphic design. Students learn to use in-depth research and artist model influences to support their body of work.

LEVEL 2 (YEAR 12)

DANCE - DAN222

This course involves:

  • performance of selected dance genres - contemporary, ethnic and musical theatre;
  • choreography;
  • interpretation of dance performance.

This course develops practical knowledge, allows development of ideas, skills of communicating and interpreting, and selfmanagement. It builds self-confidence and encourages creativity.

DRAMA - DRA222

This course includes a study of theatre forms; either political theatre, Elizabethan theatre or epic theatre. Students also participate in devising, developing acting techniques and

a class production. Students will have the opportunity to work on a personalised programme of Level 2 internal achievement standards which may include scriptwriting and directing. The course involves communicating and interpreting ideas; developing practical knowledge; participating and contributing; self-management; critical reflection and analysis.

Students are required to actively contribute and attend rehearsals. 

Entry Requirements: 12 credits from DRA111 or ENG111.

MUSIC - MUS222

For Year 12 Music, students will be placed on an individual learning programme. This gives students flexibility and choice from the following: performance (solo and group); composition; a music investigation topic; instrumentation; listening (aural); theory and an advanced understanding of music past and present. Students can also study music technology, mixing and recording.

It is an advantage to be a member of a school group, although this is not a necessity.

Credits: Up to 41 credits available at Level 2. Students choose assessments after consultation with Mr Coles

This course explores the conventions and processes of established design from initial concept through to the development and final design. Students develop skills in computer rendering through lnDesign and Photoshop software. The skills are acquired in an environment that encourages students to develop their research around a personal investigation; students learn to analyse and evaluate visual communication and use in-depth creative research and artist model influences to support a creative inquiry. An individualised programme of work and assessment is possible and can be negotiated with the teacher over the year.

This course offers an exploration of photographic techniques and conventions that allows students the ability to develop their research around a personal investigation. Students learn camera skills and Photoshop techniques to support the creative development of work. Students also learn to analyse and evaluate visual communication and use in-depth research and artist model influence to support a self-directed creative inquiry. An individualised programme of work and assessment is possible and can be negotiated with the teacher over the year.

This course involves performance, choreography, and critical analysis.

DRAMA - DRA333

This course focuses on New Zealand theatre and students will have the opportunity to work on a personalised programme of Level 3 internal achievement standards.

This may include scriptwriting and directing. Students will interpret play texts, develop drama techniques, explore naturalistic characterisation and sustaining roles, participate in a class performance and devise drama for solo or pair performance. This course involves communicating and interpreting ideas; developing practical knowledge, explores participating and contributing, self-management, critical reflection and analysis.

Students are required to actively contribute and attend rehearsals.

Credits: 24 at Level 3, negotiated with the teacher

All credits count for either reading or writing for UE literacy

At this level all students are placed on an individual learning programme. Students will choose from a range of the following: practical music (solo and group); composition; arrangement; a music investigation topic; and an in - depth music study of a popular piece.
