AGHS — Nov 30, 2020

On Tuesday November 3rd, we celebrated the achievements of students who have had success in Arts with our Arts Colours assembly. In this assembly students were awarded either an Arts Colours badge or a Service award. To earn an Arts Colours badge students have to be achieving at a high level in their chosen activity. They need to have been participating at this high level for three years and be a good role model, showing leadership and actively promoting the activity throughout the school. Service Awards recognise students who have done service to the school through an arts activity, cultural activity, library or in IT. They are the support crew in our school community who make things happen. The criteria for Service Awards are commitment, reliability, loyalty and generosity of time.

This year we awarded 68 Colours Badges and 65 Service Awards. We would like to congratulate those students who got an award. We would like to thank those students for thier positive contribution to our school life. We also presented two special awards at this assembly. The first was to Hazel Wilson who is a New Zealand representative in the New Zealand Youth Brass Band. The second was to Mimi Cresswell who is a member of the New Zealand Secondary School Symphony Orchestra.

The school would also like to thank our guest speaker, Daisy Lavea-Timo. Daisy is a New Zealand born, Samoan slam poet. She was crowned the 2017 New Zealand Slam Poet. Daisy spoke about the importance of the Arts in our lives and shared a poem around students lives at school and being proud of their identities. We also had performances from the Kapa Haka group and the year twelve dance class. The class performed a dance choreographed by Natalya Jackson. The rock band J15 performed an original song called ‘Man on the Moon’. This was written by Izzy Bernstone. The Saxophone ensemble performed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen. Well done to all our performers.
