Fashion and Design Technology

Sharon Thrupp —

Following the Design Technology Cycle, Year 11 students were given the opportunity to make streetwear garments to meet identified needs within their wardrobe.

Holly Lennon (left), and Ami Watson (right) are wearing their dresses they have made, while Laura Powley (centre) is wearing the second range of garments she has made in her collection, which are green corduroy trousers and a tailored white shirt.

Year 12 Wearable Art

Students researched, designed, and constructed wearable art garments made of recycled materials that reflected an open theme.

The Octopus and The Ocean is Nicole Kim’s title for her Wearable Art which is exhibited in the foyer at Avonside Girls.

Nicole wanted to put attention on litter, such as plastics that fill the ocean and decided that the octopus was a good way to show meaningful contrast in her design, as the octopus is an example of marine life affected.

Nicole noted that Octopi have been spotted sheltering and laying eggs inside tyres and plastics that have been thrown into the waters, making them vulnerable to chemicals.

The front of the garment shows a peaceful, perfect ocean and a healthy octopus and the back represents the littered imperfect side with pieces of decimated octopus.

A Changing Future

Kate Harden decided to create a Wearable Arts garment that accurately reflected her Theme of ‘A Changing Future’. The final exhibit is an orange knee-length dress with a skin-tight velvet underskirt, 2 cone-like overskirts with copper tape detail and a low V-back strapless bodice with the same copper tape detail. The shape of the dress is inspired by what many current depictions of the future have in their architecture with the large circular shapes. The copper details on the dress convey the theme of ‘A Changing Future’ with precious metals such as copper, being a sign of wealth throughout time, and our hope that in the future we will see this wealth, although this often changes for many of us.

The Swan

Weng Lamb Pun created this outstanding exhibition piece titled “The Swan” gaining Excellence in Fashion Design Technology at level 2.

The garment is made from fully recycled materials and every element has been individually crafted from the flower on the eyepiece, every feather and the hand sewn and pleated lace bodice to name a few. Weng Lamb wanted to personally wear her garment and is photographed here in the foyer of Avonside Girls High School. It is intended that these garments will be exhibited in 2023 in the city.
