Sports Update

AGHS —

Softball: Congratulations to Shyla de Lautour and Sydelle Sipiki-Samuelu who haven been selected in the New Zealand Under 15 Developing Sox Softball Squad for 2021/2022 season.

League:  Congratulations to the following students for being selected into the Canterbury Rugby League Regional 9s teams:

U16 girls: Te Araoa Hona

U18 girls: Kyla Lynch-Brown, Jaydika Tafua, Trinity Edwards-Rea, Tayla Rakena.

Cycling:  Year 13 student Amelia Sykes recently competed in the Track National Championships for Cycling and finished with four 1st place finishes in the 500m Time Trial, Points Race, 2000m Individual Pursuit, and Elimination race along with three 2nd place finishes in the Team Pursuit, Team Sprint and 7500m Scratch race. Amelia also won the Bruce and Amy Dawe Cup which is presented to the U19 female with the most points across the time trial, sprint and scratch race combined.

Canoe Polo:  Congratulations to the Avonside Girls’ High School canoe polo team - Ameelya Boyce Roberts, Darnae Parkes, Grace Costello, Jessica Gillard, Phoebe Hunt, Sasha Allen and Yazmin Blake. The team stepped up from C to B grade this term, in only the second season for several of the players. After some challenging games during the regular season, they made it through to the 3rd/ 4th place play-off on finals day. They initially went behind 4-1 to the more experienced Kaiapoi High team, before pulling back to finish the game 4-4. They have therefore gained joint third place in their first season in B grade.

Rowing:  Five students from Avonside’s rowing squad were selected to compete at the Maadi cup in Twizel during tournament week. Ash Fleming, Stella Cook, Andie Scheiwe, Libby Greaves and Georgia Houghton.

Libby Greaves won her C final, Stella and Ash convincingly won the Under 18 doubles B final, and the quad gained a third place which they were very pleased with.

A very successful outcome and a special thank you for Marewa Cryer their coach, who trained them to be the athletes that they are.

Korfball:  During the Summer season we have had a group of students participating in a weekly korfball secondary schools competition. We have had 4 teams competing and our senior mixed team with Shirley Boys' High School won the A grade division. Our other teams made the playoffs.

Volleyball:  Congratulations to our A volleyball team who won the South Island Satellite Volleyball Tournament!   Our girls were entered into Division 2 and due to covid were only able to take a team of 7 from our team of 10. On Thursday the girls were able to beat both Hornby high school and Craighead high school 3-1. Friday was very different for the team as they lost both games. Fortunately, because the girls played so well on the first day they were able to make it to the semi finals where they played Roncalli College and won 3-1. In the finals they played St Andrew’s College beating them 3 sets to 2. These girls played with class and humility. When they needed to work hard they did not back out but really pushed themselves.

Dragon Boating:  Congratulations to Jessica Kent-McConigley, Hazel Wheeler, Jorja Walshe, Sam Carswell, Samantha Kirkman, Lily Barnes, Maiah Turton, Ruby Froggatt, Isabella Harneiss, Evelyn Gilmore and Aleigha Macdonald-Cope who proudly represented the return of Avonside Girls’ yesterday at the Dragon Boating 2022 South Island Secondary School Cup!

They placed 3rd in the 250 metre A Final (milliseconds difference!) and 2nd in the 420m B Final.
