Principal Legacy

AGHS —

The history of Avonside Girls' High School includes a focus on the legacy of each past Principal.

The journey of our school through its 95 years is one in which 10 Principals have put on the korowai of leadership before handing it on to the next Principal. I now stand as the 11th Principal with all this history woven into the cloak I now wear as leader. Earlier in the term, Mrs Sue Hume came in to add her photograph to the wall of past Principals. Sue Hume's legacy is hugely important for us to pick up and carry forward. In her early days as Principal of Avonside, the Christchurch earthquake hit, and destroyed the possibility of the school remaining on it's original site. Over the next 10 years Sue fought hard to ensure that there would be an Avonside Girls' High School, and that there would be single sex education on the East side of Christchurch. Some other schools were closed and some merged. It is due to Sue's work and energy that Avonside remained the school it was, and that it moved to a new campus built for the requirements needed to educate and empower young women in the 21st century. Sue has been enjoying her much deserved retirement and has just completed the Alps to Ocean bike ride.
