In-class Behaviour Concerns

Tanya Clegg —

A refresh on our school behaviour processes.

If a student is not behaving well, or engaging in their learning in class, please attempt several low-level interventions with the student. These might include proximity, using their name, proximity praise, a mini chat or other strategies.

However, if there is no improvement in the period, use your department Level 1 referral processes.

If you do a Level 1 referral, please ensure it is entered in the student's KAMAR pastoral page so we can see any patterns of behaviour or learning needs in our Pou hui.

Ako teachers who notice Level 1 referrals are encouraged to contact home and raise any concerns with the whanau. Classroom/Subject teachers can also do the call home, but just record that on KAMAR so the ako teacher doesn't double up.

Subsequently, Level 2 referrals to the Enrichment Centre and Ngaire can be used for continued non compliance. A Level 2 referral means the student cannot return to class unless a referral meeting is held. We aim to hold these within 2 days, please let the Kaitiaki know if you can't meet this timeframe so they can assist. Referral meetings can be held with any senior member of your department as support; departments will have decided who these people are. A level 2 referral is entered in KAMAR by Ngaire, so you don't have to do a pastoral entry. Please just ensure the student is sent with a referral slip, and work to complete if possible.

We discuss referral data in our pou hui and keep an eye on patterns of classroom behaviour in order to help us arrange whanau hui or next discipline and support steps, so KAMAR records are important to support this process.
