Shark Tank

Ginni Orr —

Three students attended the Shark Tank competition held in the JIX innovation space at Vodafone, Central Christchurch.

It was an outstanding couple of days with ākonga and kaiako listening to a top line up of speakers including learning about the cloud with AWS (Amzon Web Services), Kendal Flutey of Banqer, visiting a hi-tech gym where clients exercise using sensors - ākonga got to experience it, so did I, a lot harder than I thought(!), Paula from Netsafe and Sir Ian Taylor! The young people considered problems they saw with schools and education and came up with solutions that they pitched on Friday later afternoon.

Our students were stunning. The issue they grappled with was the toilet issue. They created the concept and pitched an app they called ICUP. It involves being able to see which cubicles are free so as a user you do not need to trek around the school hoping to find an empty cubicle.

As a consequence of their fantastic pitch, next year our team and the CGHS team will be connected with Kendal Flutey and the Banqer team for a day. It was an experience that certainly helped make them realise what is possible within the world in tech and what they come up with really has real life possibilities!

The AGHS Shark Tank students were:

  • Zoe Croot - Yr 10
  • Trinity Akarangi - Yr 10
  • Renee Drury - Yr 9
