International Department Update

AGHS —

Thai Online Classroom:

Wednesday 2 September was the inaugural digital online classroom with Rayongwittayakom in Thailand.

Avonside Girls’ High School is part of a regional memorandum of understanding (MOU) with this school and we were both asked to take part in this pilot scheme by ENZ (Education New Zealand) Thailand. (ENZ is the peak government body for international education in NZ) with the support of Christchurch Educated and Thai agency, Kiwi Centre.

Laura Failing and Francesca Hickey have worked with their Year 10 Integrated classes (10XT and 10XV) who are excited about learning about students from a different culture and country. The afternoon session started with both Principals and Chortip Pramoolpol giving speeches before the students met in small groups of 4-6 online using Teams.

The event was very successful, after a few technical hitches, and the students are already looking forward to next time when they will get to meet their Thai group members again and decide on a global issue which they need to solve together and work out how to present.

Volunteer Programme for our International Students:

Due to Covid many of our planned volunteer events in the community have been cancelled so we decided to use the school facilities and a team of international students baked 80 cupcakes over three days which we delivered to Windsor Care Rest Home. The residents were delighted to receive their cupcakes and the girls loved the opportunity to engage with them.
