Climbing Club

Ginni Orr —

It was a slow start to climbing this year due to Covid. However, Term Two saw a keen group of climbers take to the Orua Paeroa wall with vigour.

There was a lot of on-sighting as half the wall had been rerouted making it an exciting time for those returning from previous years.

The highlights of Term Two climbing included belaying Mrs Law on the wall and the final days grade climbing certificates. Term Three saw students preparing for the South Island Climbing Competition.

This involved developing climbing endurance with the goal of six or more climbs per Thursday session. Seven students competed as two teams at the South Islands – a Year 9 team of Thea, Poppy, Isla and Pania and a Senior team of Willow, Bella-Raine and Phoebe.

It was two epic days of full-on climbing and lots of eating to fuel it! Everyone’s climbing technique and confidence improved hugely over the two days and watching other climbers up a route allowed a lot of red pointing to go on! Goals have already been set for 2022!

Climbing club is open to anyone at school who would like to give climbing a go. It’s a great opportunity to learn new skills and mix with a new group of people. The environment is very welcoming with more experienced climbers helping out new folk to the group. Let’s get vertical as it’s a load of fun!
