Hockey

Ava Croton, Lily Barnes, and Caitlin Nicholas —

In the past few years the Avonside 1st XI won Division 3 and Division 2.

After great results in the preseason/grading games and our previous success, Canterbury Hockey invited us to play in Division 1 which was a great opportunity for the team to grow their skills and confidence. Losing a few players from last year left the team having to adapt to the new faces and skills available. We had a good season and played our best every game, but unfortunately lost most games by one goal. However, the girls fought to the end of each game and left everything out on the turf.

After years of Covid and no tournaments for 3 years the Avonside Girls' Hockey 1st XI attended the Jenny Mcdonald Cup in Nelson. This national tournament allowed us to compete against many schools from all over New Zealand. Once again the girls fought hard, played well as a team and stepped up to the challenge. In our pool play, the team had 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss. Which was a great result but due to the other team's results had us sitting 4th in our pool playing off for 5th-8th. We are all very proud of the team for the amazing effort they put in throughout the season and are excited to see what next season brings.

Lastly, we would like to say a big thank you to Brydie Washington (coach) who put in a great deal of work and dedication to the team, leading to massive improvements throughout the season. We would also like to thank Karen Hoare (teacher in charge) and Jo Croton (manager) for all the time they gave up and the effort they put in. We wouldn't have been able to do it without amazing people like these and words can’t express how appreciative we are for all you have done.
